Our therapists are trained in the McKenzie Method®, also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy®. The method encourages active patient involvement and education, so that patients can learn to self-manage pain arising from bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. This system is well-researched and evidence-based and recommended all over the world for back, neck and extremity problems.
At Southern Rehab in Nelson, we require all our staff to achieve a high level of clinical expertise in this method. One of our principal physiotherapists has attained the Diploma in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy – the highest level of education within the McKenzie Institute International. All our other physiotherapists are either Credentialed McKenzie Therapists or are involved in the current McKenzie Institute NZ education process, ensuring a seamless transition between practitioners if required.
We run small group classes in "Therapeutic Pilates". These individualised programmes give you lots of one-on-one attention, improving tone and strength and giving you with the confidence to manage after an injury. We also have a therapist who uses acupuncture as an adjunct to treatment.
Water has long been used as therapy for a range of issues, from pain relief to muscle strengthening. Hydrotherapy promotes relaxation, mobilises joints, develops balance and coordination, and improves general fitness. It is ideal for helping the body recover from injury or illness.
